I started growing salad after 25 years of teaching. I helped Charles Dowding in his market garden where he taught me about soil preparation and No dig gardening. I was amazed by the fertility of the soil and the health of the vegetables.

I love filling the bags with all the different colours, shapes and textures of my leaves. My customers have noticed how much more taste and vitality my leaves have. I put edible flowers and herbs in my salad bags for extra flavour and interest.

NO DIG

In order to create my no dig garden I covered an area of field with black plastic for 3 months to kill off the grass and weeds. Then I spread organic cow manure and compost. The worms aerate and mix the soil creating a fertile and healthy bed. If I was to dig this soil, not only would it be very hard work but the soil would lose itís structure and moisture and weeds would be introduced. The undisturbed soil is dark and rich. The surface of the soil tends to be more lumpy which discourages the slugs. I do not use edges for my beds as these too encourage slugs.

MOON SOWING

I use Maria Thunís Moon Calendar to give me dates to sow my seeds. I have found more successful germination and stronger growth when seeds are sown Ďby the mooní. This is how I understand it...! Just as the moon pulls the tides in the oceans it also causes moisture to rise in the earth. At the New Moon the lunar gravity pulls water up - this is the best time for sowing seeds which grow above the ground such as lettuces, broccoli, cabbage and grain crops. After the Full Moon, as the moon wanes the energy is drawing down making it a good time to sow root crops such as carrots, onions, potatoes and beetroot.
